(1)MEDITATION ON THE THREE POWERS OF THE SOUL - INTELLECT, MEMORY
AND WILL
From the Writings of Luisa Piccarreta - The Little Daughter of the Divine Will
INTRODUCTION ON THE THREE POWERS TOGETHER
I/M/W are gifts that God gave man in creating him - they are natural gifts.
Natural gifts: Body with five senses, and soul with intellect, memory and will.
Preternatural Gifts: Infused knowledge, immunity, immortality, integrity.
Supernatural Gifts: The Divine Will as life (Trinitarian inhabitation).
Adam had all these gifts, which he was to transmit to all the future generations as the head of the
human family. And first of all, he had to begin with Eve. Eve possessed all the natural gifts, but not the fullness of the preternatural gifts, and supernatural gifts, because in God’s Will she was to receive this transmission from Adam.
Because of ORIGINAL SIN, which is the sin of Adam - in fact, if Eve had sinned but Adam had not, he could still have corrected Eve and transmit all the gifts received to the future generations - he lost the Divine Will as life (supernatural gift), as well as the preternatural gifts (which, in a way, are a consequence of the gift of the Divine Will). He did not lose the natural gifts. And if after original sin, his nature too became weak and subject to illnesses and limitations, this was a consequence of his withdrawal from the Divine Will; however, his nature in itself was not corrupted by original sin. In fact, all is in the will. (Dec. 8, 1923, Vol. 16) “…It was the will that crushed man - that is, his nature; it was not nature that crushed the will of man. Nature remained in its place, just as it was created by Me; nothing changed. It was his will that changed and put itself against nothing less than a Divine Will.
This rebellious will crushed his nature, debilitating it, contaminating it, and rendering it slave to most vile passions. It happened as to a container full of fragrances or precious objects: if it is emptied and then filled with rottenness or vile things, does the container perhaps change? The content has changed, but the container is always the same; at the most, it becomes more or less estimable, depending on what it contains. Such was man…” Now, the three powers of the soul cannot be conceived as separate, but rather, they are connected together and form one soul - just as the Three Divine Persons cannot be separated, and together They are One God. If one of the powers is lacking, the other two are rendered impotent and paralyzed as well:
1. E.g. no intelligence. The creature would lack the ability to exercise her free will rationally, and the
information stored in her memory would remain idle and useless, because her lack of intelligence would not allow her to process any information and to learn from experience.
2. E.g. no memory - e.g. ‘amnesia’. Inability to store and to use information in order to make rational
decisions. The creature would not be able to learn from past experience, and therefore she would be
unable to grow.
3. E.g. no will. In this case, the worst, the creature would ‘turn’ into an animal, or a vegetable…or
into a computer, which has memory, processing capacity (CPU), but no will and therefore no
creative/innovative capacity.
However, the primacy, as we saw, belongs to the will: if the will is good, the other faculties can
develop in good; if the will is evil, the other faculties too, as well a the body, receive the negative
consequences of a wicked will. The connection and inseparability of the three powers is indeed a mark of their Divine Maker. In fact, all three Divine Persons concurred in creating them:
April 8, 1922 - Volume 14 {orig.}
The Most Holy Trinity concurring is the creation of man. Sorrow of Jesus in seeing the will, the
intelligence and the memory of man deformed. “…I endowed man with will, intellect and memory. In
the first shone My Celestial Father who, as primary act communicated His Power, His Sanctity and His height, through which He elevated the human will, investing it with His own Sanctity, Power and
nobility, leaving all currents between Himself and the human will opened, so that it might be enriched
more and more with the treasurers of My Divinity. Between the human will and the Divine there was
neither ‘yours’ nor ‘mine’, but everything was in common, with mutual accord. Man was Our image -
Our own thing; so, he veiled Us. Our Life was to be his; therefore, as primary act He constituted his
will free and independent, just as the Will of My Celestial Father was, as primary act. But how much
has this will disfigured itself! Free as it was, it became the slave of most vile passions. Ah, it is the
beginning of all the evils of man! It can no longer be recognized. How it decayed from its nobility…it
is disgusting to look at! Now, as second act, I, Son of God, concurred by endowing man with intellect, communicating to him My Wisdom and the knowledge of all things, so that by knowing them, he might enjoy them and delight in what is good. But alas, what a bilge of vices is the intelligence of the creature! He has used knowledge to deny his Creator. Then, as third act, the Holy Spirit concurred by endowing him with memory, so that in remembering so many benefits, he might be in continuous currents of love, in continuous relations. Love was to crown him, embrace him and permeate all of his life. But how saddened the Eternal Love remains! This memory remembers pleasures, riches, and even to sin, while the Sacrosanct Trinity is put out of the gifts which It gave to Its creature. My sorrow was indescribably at seeing the deformity of the three powers of man. We had formed Our Royal Palace in him, and he had cast Us out.” With this necessary premise - the inseparability and interrelation of the three faculties - let us try to examine and observe them one by one, but only with the purpose of understanding better how they operate together, and how we can and must use them to fulfill the purpose for which we were endowed with them.
THE INTELLIGENCE
1. WHAT IT IS AND THE PURPOSE OF IT. The INTELLIGENCE is the ability to know and to
understand - but what? Both material and spiritual realities (indeed all material and natural things are
veils that cover superior spiritual truths, and vehicles/channels that allow the creatures to understand
them). But what is the purpose of this knowing and understanding of the intellect? The purpose of
man is to grow in the Image and Likeness of His Creator, and therefore the only purpose of the intellect of man is to know and to understanding God and His works in order to become more similar to Him.
August 19, 1908 - Volume 8
“…The soul possesses a mental intelligence, and she must apply it to comprehend God, to think of
good alone, never allowing any bad seed to enter her mind; and this is the sowing of good with the
mind… and I will ask for an account for nothing but to give them the fruit of their harvests. I will give it to the intelligence, for the more it has comprehended Me in life, the more it will comprehend Me in Heaven; and the more it will comprehend Me, the greater the joy and beatitude with which it will be inundated…” Any other purpose/intent (primacy of the will!) is outside of the order of creation. In the “best case”, it is sterile human curiosity; or it is intellectual human pride; and in the “worst case” it is diabolical perversion.
November 4, 1921 - Volume 13
“…I linked My Wisdom to her intelligence, so that her intelligence might be nothing but the reflection on Mine; and if man reaches such great extent with his science, as to seem incredible, it is because the reflection of Mine is reflected in his…” So, any application of the human intelligence which does not recognize God as the only source of wisdom is a theft from God, and the most horrible affront, when it is directed toward the negation of God Himself. (e.g. evolutionary theory).
2. ORIGINAL STATE. Our father Adam was given a perfect human intellect, which, before original
sin,, he used in its fullness through the gift of infused knowledge and understanding, a necessary
prerogative of the head of the human family.
November 12, 1925 Volume 18
…”My daughter, be attentive in doing your acts in My Will. You must know that for one who has been called to be the head of a mission, the more good she encloses which belong to this mission, the more good she will be able to communicate to others. Those goods will be as many seeds which you will lend to others, so that, whoever will have the fortune of wanting to acquire those seeds, may become the possessor of the harvest of those very seeds. This happened with Adam, who, being the first man, was constituted head of all generations; and being the head, by necessity he had to possess the seeds of all that is necessary for the development of human life, so that these might be given to others. It is true that these seeds have been enlarged, clarified, known more, according to the goodwill of the following generations, to their capabilities, and to the applications they made of these very seeds; but Adam had them all within himself, and one can say that everything comes from him. Therefore, it can be said that, in being created by God, he was provided with all sciences. All that the others learn with so many efforts, he possessed as a gift in a surprising way. So, he possessed the knowledge of all the things of the earth; he had knowledge of all the plants, of all the herbs and of the virtue which each of them contained. He had knowledge of all the species of animals and of how to use them; he had knowledge of music of chant, of writing, of medicine - in sum, of everything. And if the generations possessed each one its special science, Adam possessed them all…” Moreover, since he lived in the Divine Will, he did not have to make any effort to “believe” or to “comprehend” the working of the Divine Will and the love of God for him - he could simply see it, experience it and possess it, in each created thing; he did not need to exercise faith.
November 6, 1906 Volume 7
Jesus: “I had neither faith nor hope, nor could I have them, because I was god Himself - I was only
love… and by living in My Will, the soul acquires the most heroic love, and reaches the point of loving Me with My own love. She becomes all love, and becoming all love, she is in continuous contact with Me. So, she is with Me, in Me, and for Me she does everything I want; nor does she move or desire anything but My Will, in which all the love of the Eternal One is enclosed, and in which she herself remains enclosed. By living in this way, the soul almost comes to the point of dissolving faith and hope, because as she comes to live of Divine Will, the soul no longer feels in contact with faith and hope. Since she lives of the Will of God, what does she had to believe if she has found It and made of It her food? And what does she have to hope for, if she already possesses It by living, not outside of God, but in God?…”
3. THE CONSEQUENCES OF ORIGINAL SIN ON THE INTELLECT OF MAN AND HIS
KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIVINE WILL
September 17, 1926 Volume 20
…”My daughter, as long as he remained in the terrestrial Eden, living in the Kingdom of the Supreme
Will, Adam possessed all knowledge, as much as it is possible for a creature, if that which belonged to the Kingdom he possessed. But as soon as he went out of It, his intellect was obscured; he lost the
light of his kingdom, and could not find the appropriate words in order to manifest the knowledges he
had acquired about the Supreme Will. In fact, the Divine Will Itself which would have given him the
necessary terms to manifest to others what he had known, was missing in him. This, on his part; more
so since every time he remembered his withdrawal from My Will, and the highest good he had lost, he felt such a grip of sorrow as to become taciturn - engrossed in the pain for the loss of a Kingdom so great, and for the irreparable evils which, as much as Adam might do, it was snot given to him to repair. That very God whom he had offended was needed in order to remedy them. On the part of his Creator, he received no order, and therefore he was not given enough capacity to manifest it. Why manifest a knowledge if it would not give him the good it contained? Only then do I make a good known, when want to give it. However, even though Adam did not speak extensively about the Kingdom of My Will, he taught many important things which regarded It. In fact, during the first times of the history of the world up to Noah, the generations had no need of laws, and were no idolatries, nor diversity of languages; rather, all recognized their one God and had one language, because they cared more about My Will. But as they kept moving away from It, Idolatries arise and evils became worse. This is why God saw the necessity of giving His laws as preservers for the human generations.
